I'm excited to see the knitting machine and the beautiful designs. How can I get a pattern for the hats? If there are knitters on the island looking to list online, www.etsy.com is a fantastic resource for makers and seekers of quality hand-made items, with sellers and buyers around the world.
Thanks for your post. I've been inspired by the waxwing photos to add a waxwing to my line-up of felt birds, which I sew and decorate by hand and sell for pocket money. Best of luck.Frithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01733628227209788165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420769935370067037.post-20569765536075618662011-01-10T21:27:52.254+00:002011-01-10T21:27:52.254+00:00A lovely insight of life on Fair Isle.A lovely insight of life on Fair Isle.theconstantwalkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06243294919370970037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420769935370067037.post-72957787941649535702011-01-09T21:26:28.531+00:002011-01-09T21:26:28.531+00:00Fascinating post Tommy. You, your wife and son owe it to yourselves and to the Fair Isle heritage of knitting to take any courses offered and to encourage others to do so too. I would love to see the tradition survive. I am a traditional quiltmaker who watches both the cheap asian imports and the "rush rush sell more fabric" industry that encourages machine piecing, appliquing and quilting as it makes inroads into a traditional and unique craft. It seems, on a more positive note that more and more artisanal small businesses are taking hold here in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada as the commitment to sustainability and locally sourced products grows stronger.
You are documenting a faltering way of life - keep up the good work.Janethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17643680000059427128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420769935370067037.post-11397323271843644042011-01-09T02:03:18.543+00:002011-01-09T02:03:18.543+00:00This is an amazing tale of industry, creativity, e...This is an amazing tale of industry, creativity, entrepreneurship, global economies, and a cultural heritage trade about to be consumed- or not. In Canada there is a huge resurgence of Buy Local, and support for crafters and artisans lending their unique talents to the branding of a nation. I hope that Scotland has similar government programs that will help lend support to the knitters of Fair Isle. That's where I would start looking for a little help to take the edge off the need to go elsewhere for work by the locals.
Great post!!Susan Ellishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04155106135649887676noreply@blogger.com
